The vehicle ECM is an electric computer which used in modernised auto motives to maneuver its electronic modules. Gathering data from sensors and sending output to digital units, the vehicle's computer alter the proper operation of the vehicle.
The vehicle computer module collect inputs from various digital units in the motor vehicle such as the camshaft and crankshaft sensors to cleverly compute information such as exhaust, fuel supply, cooling system and some other internal components to evaluate and maneuver the sustaining working state of the transmission, engine system such as the body functions, the airbags, the AC and more.
A simple example is the wheel speed sensor which detects the wheel speed and transfer the information to the engine control unit. This way, rather than sending information to number of wires from one sensor, the information is being delivered by the ECM to all the components that makes use of this information as the speedometer, suspension system, ABS and more.
